Electric Dryers and Electric Ranges are required by code to be a dedicated 4-wire circuit. With a 4-wire system, you eliminate the possibility of any ground current traveling to the appliance.

Homes built before 1996 may only have a 3-wire system. In most cases these systems can be updated and brought up to current code requirements.
